Announcing Alastair Mcleod as the new Chieftain of the Java St. Andrew Society

Dear Members, Friends, and Sponsors of the Society,
Firstly, may I extend a belated happy New Year and I hope you were able to toast our national Bard yesterday and enjoy some haggis!

I am delighted to share with you that Alastair Mcleod will be taking over as the new Chieftain, a role that he occupied in 2017/2018 while I will remain on the Committee.

May I also take this opportunity to thank you for your support during my 4 years as Chieftain and to specifically thank John and Sarah Brown, Roger Finnie and Fany Karda without whom we could not have continued the growth of Java St. Andrew Society.

Furthermore, on behalf of myself and the committee may I extend our sincere thanks to the ASEAN St Andrew Society, Asian Tigers, ASTRA, Qatar Airways, The RIO Club, Jakarta Land, Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta and Jamieson & Carry whose sponsorship and partnership over the years has allowed us to remain an active, relevant and buoyant Society.

In closing it has been an honour to have played a small part in the journey of the Java St. Andrew Society now entering its 105th year. Thank you.

Support Those in Need

About two weeks ago, on 25 November 2023, the St. Andrew’s ball filled our hearts with joy. Now the chieftain has presented the donations to @fiona_unity_foundation . Each raffle ticket generously contributed goes directly to the Fiona Foundation, symbolizing a step toward empowering children. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed.

Thompson Cup 2023

Saturday, 18 March 2023. Golf and Scotland are inextricably intertwined with the game subsequently being spread across the world by the Scots as they travelled. With Jakarta being home to one of the oldest golf clubs, outside of the UK, Jakarta Golf Club having been founded in 1872, its unsurprising to find notice of an annual St Andrew’s golf game of Scots taking on the Rest of the World some 80+ years ago as this clipping from the Dutch colonial newspapers evidences.

This tradition continues to today with the St Andrew’s Society hosting the St George’s Society for 2 matches each year for the Thompson Cup, in honour of their respective celebratory dates. The latest edition was held recently on Saturday 18th March 2023 at Cengkareng Golf Club with teams of 12 representing each Society in a four ball match, followed by a BBQ and victuals which went well into the evening. For the record, St Andrew’s Society were able to win back the Thompson Cup with a 4 ½ to 1 ½ victory.
