St Andrew’s Ball 2019
The 2019 Java St Andrew Society’s St Andrew’s Ball was held on 30th November 2019 at the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta. As in 2018, the Ball was sold out with slightly over 250 guests joining the JSAS Committee to celebrate the Society’s gala event of the year. Setting the mood for the evening, guests were welcomed at the lobby by a piper before moving up the cocktail reception area in front of the ballroom to enjoy a pre-dinner drink and take group photos in front of our photo wall.
After cocktails and canapes, the guests were escorted into the ballroom ahead of the Chieftain’s table, including the British Ambassador, H.E. Owen Jenkins, and the Swedish Ambassador, H.E. Marina Berg, with their respective spouses, who were piped to their seats by the Perth Highland Pipe Band. Deputy Chieftain Andrew Abram, as our master of ceremonies for the evening then opened proceedings before welcoming Chieftain Roger Finnie to deliver his opening remarks, welcoming our guests, thanking the generous sponsors who had supported the evening and more somberly, wishing our best regards to former Chieftain Scott Younger and his family as he recovers from a stroke. Following the Selkirk Grace delivered by Andrew Clydesdale, former Chieftain Graham Garvin gave a stirring Address to the Haggis before the rest of the meal was served.
Entertainment through the evening was provided by Bahookie, returning again from Scotland, and local band Centerstage, who between them made sure the dance floor was always full. Giving guests a moment to rest, we ran a raffle and live auction with Graeme Harley doing an excellent job of encouraging our generous bidders to part with the funds in support of the Society. Toasts to Indonesia and The Queen were delivered by H.E. Owen Jenkins and to Scotland by Andrew Abram before guests were free to dance the rest of the evening away until the wee hours of the morning.
On behalf of the Society our sincere appreciation and thanks to everyone who supported the evening. Our main sponsors on the evening were The Rio Club, Astra, Asian Tigers, Jakarta Land, Mayapada Healthcare Group and the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, the latter also doing a wonderful job again as our hosts for the evening. The Raffle and Auction was generously supported by Cathay Pacific, Aman Resorts, Amandari, Swire Properties, Vong, Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, Pazir’s Carpets, Oku, Celebrity Fitness, Fitness First, AW Kitchen, Dermis, Amigos, Logan Air, Amuz and Glenmorangie. Last, but by no means least, a huge thank you from the Chieftain to the Committee, Sarah and John Brown, Octa and Andrew Abram, Andrew and Karen Clydesdale and Kevin Kealey, who all did a tremendous job of putting the evening together.
