Burns’ Supper 2020
Saturday 25th January 2020 saw the Java St Andrew Society celebrate the 261st anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s most famous and popular bard, Robert Burns. Hosted at the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, the Committee created a cosy, intimate but sophisticated evening where our guests could come and enjoy a wonderful evening of Burns’ works and a mix of traditional speeches and Scottish folk entertainment, all accompanied by a Scottish meal all washed down with Whisky. With only 50 seats available the event was a sell out and those who joined us had a wonderful evening. So much so that the pipes and songs were still going well into the early morning and long after we had closed the official part of the evening with a traditional rendition of Auld Lang Syne.!
On arrival, guests enjoyed cocktails and canapes in the bar before being piped into the room by our piper, Rikki Topp. Chieftain Roger Finnie welcomed everyone to the evening and after the Selkirk Grace delivered by Andrew Clydesdale, he introduced our main entertainer for the evening, Doug Smith. Doug gave us a wonderful mix of Burns’ songs and poetry as well as mixing up the evening with some popular Scottish tunes whilst a traditional Scottish dinner was being served. Highlights of his performances were the Address to the Haggis, Holy Willie’s Prayer and Tam O’Shanter, all performed with gusto much to the enjoyment of those present.
Alistair and Barbara Speirs performed a lovely musical interlude; Alistair also delivered the Toast to the Land in Which we Live followed by Chieftain Roger Finnie delivering the Toast to Scotland. The Toast to the Lassies was performed by Rikki Topp and Karen Clydesdale delivered the reply. In-between, Ian McGarry delivered a heartfelt and excellent speech in giving the Immortal Memory to Robert Burns. Many people have asked for a copy of the Immortal Memory and this is available here: The Immortal Memory
Many thanks to everyone who came along and supported the evening and to our sponsors on the evening, notably The Rio Club, Asian Tigers and the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta. Lastly, as always these events come together thanks to the hard work of the Committee so a special thank you again to Karen & Andrew Clydesdale, John and Sarah Brown, Andrew & Octa Abram and Kevin Kealey.
